Karavane is an essay series by Norwegian publisher Torpedo Press. Each book is about one particular work of art that has had a great influence in its time and leads to a broader debate on art and society in Norway.
The asterisk sign is an element that is used on every book cover in the series. We wanted to underscore the importance of the texts in this series by showing the actual works as footnotes to the essays. The photo documentation, being treated as footnotes, is thus placed as a separate chapter at the end of the book.
The book Victor Linds Monument considers a sculpture made by artist Victor Lind. It is an anti-monument of Norwegian police officer Knut Rød who was responsible for deporting Norwegian Jews to Auschwitz during the Second World War. Rød was exonerated of any charges after the war. The classical bronze sculpture by Lind shows Rød doing a Nazi salute and, in this book, art historian Erling Moestue Bugge discusses how the work displays a shadow that lurks in Norwegian history and why this still may be provocative.
